The perks of having a workout partner

Posted by Alicia Superina on

It’s no secret that we’re partial to a solo sweat, but science has spoken and there are some serious benefits in having a workout partner. The two best things to improve your health; getting a workout in and spending quality time with your friends but wait, there’s more…

  • You’ll enjoy the workout more
Recent studies have shown that those who work out with someone else (friend, co-worker, partner) enjoyed the exercise much more than those who went it alone. Socialising and exercising - a winning combo!
  • You’re less likely to get injured
Gymming alone can make keeping your form on point a lot harder than if you were gymming with a friend. You’ll be able to easily keep an eye on each others form to make sure your back doesn’t drop during your plank or if you need to sit back further while squatting and let us tell you, that can save you unnecessary pain later on.
  • You’ll feel less stressed
You had us at less stress but the fact is, according to a study in the International Journal of Stress Management, people who exercised on a stationary bicycle for 30 minutes with a friend said they felt calmer after the workout than those who cycled alone. Not to say you have to chat the whole time to feel the benefits, just simply being in someone familiars company while working out does wonders.
  • You’ll workout harder
A little bit competitive? Having a workout partner who’s fitter than you may just be what you need. Studies show that people who exercise with someone they think is better than them worked up to 200 percent harder and longer than those who went at it solo - competitiveness strikes again.
  • You’re more likely to stick at it
Let’s be honest, we’ve all talked ourselves out of that after work gym class or early morning session but when someone else is counting on you it’s SO much harder to bail (especially if you’re a good friend). Getting there consistently is just one part, not slacking off during the workout is the other part and it’s a lot harder to take a quick text message break when on the gym floor when you’ve got someone there next to you.
  • You’ll meet your goals faster
Combine working out harder and actually sticking to it and you’ll actually achieve those goals you’ve been working towards. Maybe just skip that cute little cheesecake at coffee after your session.
  • You’ll keep your routine exciting
When you have a workout partner you’re less likely to fall into the rut of doing the same old exercises which inevitably results in a plateau. Working out with someone else creates an opportunity to bounce ideas off of eachother to change up the routine which will challenge both your muscles and your mind.

There we have it. Grab your friend and go sweat ladies!
